mid winter ice
After an extended drought finding us chasing ice as far as the lakes and bays of the U.P. we finally seem to have some local ice. Skegemog which usually has more than 2 feet of ice by now has around 8" of snow ice and has been sailed by club members on numerous occasions. Elk has tried to freeze but has not quite made it. Birch Lake has been sailed. Lake Bellaire is frozen and has looked promising but has not been sailed. Lake Leelanau has 4" of clear snow ice and has been sailed. Lake Charlevoix has 4-5" of clear snow ice and is being sailed at Boyne City, it is reported still open in the middle of the big arm of the lake. Houghton Lake has frozen in plates that move around leaving open water in areas, there are no fishermen. Higgins Lake has 4" of black ice and fishermen but has not been sailed. Government Bay in Cederville is being sailed. 'So grind the rust off yur runners and come on out.
