Munuscong Bay ice boating in Pickford Empty Munuscong Bay ice boating in Pickford

GTIYC has been sailing the first boat-able ice in the mid-west on Munuscong Bay near Pickford MI in the UP! The ice is around 4 to 5" with a pebbly surface and no or very little snow depending on where you are. This bay is on the Saint Mary's River and is a vast area of very shallow water. Most of the bay is no deeper than 3' so going thru the ice would involve walking out rather than swimming. In the distance, many miles away you can see freighters going by as this is the busiest waterway in the world. There is a launch ramp and accommodations on site at 'Dan's Cabins Resort' about 6.5 mi east of Pickford (turn at the only blinking light in Pickford). Dan's Cabins and Resort does have a web site (devoted to fishing) that will give you further info. They have been very helpful so far and I believe a bit curious about what these ice sailors are up to!
We'll take up some more boats and give them a chance to try it over the Holidays! Hope to see some of you there!
